our story

Healthy in Harris County is more than just a resource hub. It's a movement inspired by the lifeblood of Harris County, the local culture of our community members, and the unique lifestyles they lead. Using the concept of taking something that exists and refining it to make it matter, this platform and its accompanying journal equally hope to empower communities to transform their habits in order to become the best versions of themselves.

Our mission is to protect health, prevent disease and injury, while promoting the well-being of everyone in Harris County. By providing community members with actionable insights into nutrition, exercise, and mental strength, we are bridging the gap between public health and day-to-day life.  From event and resource linkages to toolkits for community organizations, we ensure our community can thrive and find the tools they need to live abundantly.

We envision a Harris County where all people can achieve their full potential for health and well-being.  This concept drives us to build a foundation where longevity and fulfillment are reachable for every community member, regardless of their background or circumstances. Together, we are refining the landscape of public wellness, one remix at a time, to ensure a vibrant and healthy future for the entire community.

eat healthy, remix your plate

In Harris County, we know how to celebrate with food, but it's time to remix those classic flavors into a balanced lifestyle. A healthy plate isn't about giving up what you love; it's about choosing a balanced mix of nutrients that fuels your "hustle." HCPH encourages focusing on more fruits and vegetables while lowering sodium and saturated fats to prevent chronic diseases that impact nearly half of all Texas adults.

You can start your remix by logging your meals to stay mindful of your energy needs. For those looking for local support, the HCPH Nutrition and Physical Activity (NPA) program offers community-based learning like Cooking Matters and Eat Play Grow to help you master the art of the healthy remix.

walk/exercise, remix your routine

Whether you are strolling through Hermann Park or hitting the Bayou trails, physical activity is the beat that keeps Harris County moving. Remixing your routine means finding ways to incorporate aerobic activity and strength training into your weekly schedule. Small changes make a big impact: try to avoid sitting for long periods and aim to get up and move every hour to keep your "drive" alive.

For a full-body remix, consider adding stretch and balance exercises, such as yoga, to your weekly rotation. If you're unsure where to start, the NPA program provides proven plans for all age groups to help community members stay active and hit their wellness milestones.
