New diagnoses are highest among people ages 25–34, and Black and Multiracial communities are most affected. Without treatment, HIV can weaken the immune system and progress to AIDS, underscoring the ongoing need for testing, prevention, and care.

HOUSTON – World Rabies Day is on Sept. 28, and Harris County Public Health (HCPH) and Harris County Pets (HCP) are urging pet owners to take action to protect their pets, families, and community from rabies.

A feral cat in the Greensbrook Place area in unincorporated Northeast Harris County has tested positive for rabies. The cat died on Sept. 8, and rabies-positive test results were obtained on Sept. 10. This information is being shared out of an abundance of caution, and the risk to the public at large is low.

These programs help families in Harris County by offering lead testing and removal services.

This October, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Harris County Public Health (HCPH) encourages community members to take charge of their health by focusing on early detection and prevention.

To promote early detection, HCPH is offering free breast cancer screenings throughout the month. October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and Harris County Pets (HCP) is celebrating by waiving adoption fees for all dogs and cats from Oct. 1-15 during the national “Empty the Shelters” adoption event hosted by BISSELL Pet Foundation. BISSELL Pet Foundation, a national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending pet homelessness, sponsors reduced adoption fees of $50 or less per dog or cat during each nationwide event. The foundation is hosting the “Empty the Shelters” event in more than 345 shelters in 42 states, including HCP.

October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a national campaign dedicated to raising awareness about the prevalence of domestic violence, promoting prevention efforts, and providing support to survivors and those affected. Domestic violence, also referred to as intimate partner violence (IPV), continues to impact millions of people across the U.S. Harris County Public Health (HCPH) is committed to increasing public understanding of the issue and encouraging survivors to access available resources.

In recognition of World Rabies Day on September 28, Harris County Public Health (HCPH) and Harris County Pets (HCP) are urging pet owners to ensure their pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations to protect them from this fatal virus.

To mark the occasion, HCP will host a special rabies vaccine and microchipping event on September 26, starting at 9 a.m. The first 50 pets will receive FREE rabies vaccinations and microchips on a first-come, first-served basis. Pet owners are limited to two pets per household; all pets must be leashed or in a carrier. Owners are also required to bring previous veterinary records. This event will help protect pets from rabies and ensure they can be easily identified if lost. It will take place at the HCP Clinic, 612 Canino Rd, Houston, TX 77076.

Harris County Public Health’s (HCPH) Mosquito and Vector Control Division has identified a significant increase in West Nile virus (WNV), with 520 positive mosquito samples across 168 of its 268 operational areas. In addition, seven human cases of WNV and two travel-related dengue cases have been reported to HCPH in unincorporated Harris County (outside the City of Houston). HCPH urges residents to protect themselves and their loved ones against mosquito-borne illnesses.

As people recover after Hurricane Beryl, please take precautions to stay healthy and avoid injury and illness. Be aware of things that can pose health and safety risks.

Pets should not be included in celebrations that involve fireworks. Fireworks can cause injuries and burns in pets as well as people. For example, pets can eat or chew unattended fireworks, causing injury and illness. Frightened pets may break leashes, jump fences, run away, or bite someone, including beloved family members. Even if your Fourth of July does not include fireworks, pets may become frightened by noises from neighborhood celebrations.

The first County Pets on Wheels event, designed to provide community members with affordable pet care, offered spay or neuter, microchipping, and vaccine services to 20 dogs on March 22, 2024. The event was open only to dog owners in zip codes 77532 and 77652. All services were provided by licensed veterinarians and shelter staff from HCP.

As temperatures rise, so does the prevalence of mosquitoes. In recognition of National Mosquito Control Week, June 20-26, Harris County Public Health (HCPH) is raising awareness about the importance of mosquito control and prevention to protect public health.

Summer has arrived, bringing a surplus of unhoused puppies and kittens. to launch today at 9 a.m., has now been delayed. The application launch is being delayed because Harris
County Commissioners Court will discuss and take possible action on program details this Tuesday,
January 9. Information on the new application launch date will be announced later this week.
