In recognition of National Handwashing Awareness Week (Dec. 1–7) and as part of our commitment to community health, Harris County Public Health calls on community members to adopt proper hand-hygiene habits to help prevent the spread of illness and protect our families, workplaces, and schools.

Harris County continues to be impacted by HIV. Harris County Public Health (HCPH) HIV and STIs in Harris County Report shows that from 2016 to 2022, the rate of people living with HIV increased 17%, from 534 to 627 per 100,000 community members, higher than the Texas average. New diagnoses are highest among people ages 25–34, and Black and Multiracial communities are most affected. Without treatment, HIV can weaken the immune system and progress to AIDS, underscoring the ongoing need for testing, prevention, and care.

Harris County Public Health announces the launch of its online dashboard to keep the community informed about human cases of mosquito-borne diseases reported this year in Harris County (outside the City of Houston). This resource provides daily updates on confirmed, probable, and travel-related cases of diseases such as West Nile virus, dengue, and other mosquito-related illnesses.

October is National Dental Hygiene Month, a time to recognize the importance of oral health and the essential role dental hygienists play in supporting community health. This year’s theme, “Good Oral Health is Overall Health!” reminds community members that taking care of their teeth and gums is an important step toward protecting their overall well-being.

It is that time of year again when Harris County Public Health (HCPH) reminds community members that flu season is near, and as the temperatures cool, now is the time to get protected. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that the 2025–26 flu season officially begins in October and lasts through May, with September and October being the optimal months to receive the vaccine.

This October, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Harris County Public Health (HCPH) encourages community members to take charge of their health by focusing on early detection and prevention. To promote early detection, HCPH is offering free breast cancer screenings throughout the month. Screenings will be available at various HCPH Health Services locations, including the Humble, Southeast, and Antoine clinics, the East and Northeast Harris County Precinct 2 Access2Health Smart Pods™, and the mobile clinic in Cypress Station.

HOUSTON – October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and Harris County Pets (HCP) is celebrating by
offering reduced adoption fees for all dogs and cats from Oct. 1-15 during the national “Empty the
Shelters” adoption event hosted by BISSELL Pet Foundation.

HOUSTON – World Rabies Day is on Sept. 28, and Harris County Public Health (HCPH) and Harris County Pets (HCP) are urging pet owners to take action to protect their pets, families, and community from rabies.

A feral cat in the Greensbrook Place area in unincorporated Northeast Harris County has tested positive for rabies. The cat died on Sept. 8, and rabies-positive test results were obtained on Sept. 10. This information is being shared out of an abundance of caution, and the risk to the public at large is low.

September marks Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and HCPH is urging men to take charge of their health through education and screening.

Harris County Public Health (HCPH) is responding to an outbreak of canine parvovirus at its Veterinary Public Health—Harris County Pets (VPH) shelter. To control the spread of this highly contagious virus, several areas within the shelter are under quarantine, and enhanced sanitation protocols are in place to keep the animals in our care safe. To further mitigate the spread of the virus, VPH will be closing owner surrenders through Sunday, May 18.

STIs remain a major public health concern, with more than two million cases reported nationally between 2018 and 2022 and over 30,000 new HIV diagnoses reported each year. Rising infection rates can lead to increased transmission, poor health outcomes, higher healthcare costs, and reduced quality of life.

In 2023, approximately 931,578 people died due to heart disease; however, there are many ways to reduce the risk of heart disease. February is American Heart Month, and Harris County Public Health (HCPH) wants to remind residents about the significance of caring for their hearts.

Every year, about 50,000 mothers and birthing persons in the United States face serious health complications during pregnancy, and some of these complications sadly lead to death. The most alarming part of the crisis is that 80% of these deaths could be prevented. Unfortunately, Harris County has the third-highest maternal death rate in the country, highlighting the urgent need to improve maternal health.

During this period, substance-related deaths rose by 74.9%, from 673 deaths in 2018 to 1,177 in 2022, with Harris County reporting consistently higher rates than the Texas average.

October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a national campaign dedicated to raising awareness about the prevalence of domestic violence, promoting prevention efforts, and providing support to survivors and those affected. Domestic violence, also referred to as intimate partner violence (IPV), continues to impact millions of people across the U.S. Harris County Public Health (HCPH) is committed to increasing public understanding of the issue and encouraging survivors to access available resources.

In recognition of World Rabies Day on September 28, Harris County Public Health (HCPH) and Harris County Pets (HCP) are urging pet owners to ensure their pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations to protect them from this fatal virus.

To mark the occasion, HCP will host a special rabies vaccine and microchipping event on September 26, starting at 9 a.m. The first 50 pets will receive FREE rabies vaccinations and microchips on a first-come, first-served basis. Pet owners are limited to two pets per household; all pets must be leashed or in a carrier. Owners are also required to bring previous veterinary records. This event will help protect pets from rabies and ensure they can be easily identified if lost. It will take place at the HCP Clinic, 612 Canino Rd, Houston, TX 77076.

Harris County Public Health (HCPH) has released its latest annual report on air pollution and its significant impact on community health. Air pollution, caused by the release of harmful gases, particles, and liquid aerosols into the atmosphere, poses severe health risks to humans and other living organisms. Prolonged exposure to air pollution can lead to respiratory issues and chronic diseases.

Harris County Public Health’s (HCPH) Mosquito Control and Vector Control Division (MVCD) has scheduled an aerial spray operation for portions of west and northwest Harris County to combat mosquito-borne disease. The aerial application will occur Saturday evening, August 10.

Throughout the Clear the Shelters campaign –starting Aug. 10, and ending Sept. 10 – HCP is offering a special low-cost adoption fee of just $10 for all adoptable cats and dogs. This opportunity allows potential pet parents to welcome a furry companion into their lives at a reduced cost.

Harris County Public Health (HCPH) is excited to announce that following a comprehensive assessment and official approval by the Harris County Commissioners Court, 11 organizations have been designated beneficiaries of the Reproductive Healthcare Access Fund (RHAF).

The Harris County Public Health (HCPH) Office of Operations and Technology Services (OTS) has been honored with being voted first place in the Mapper’s Choice category at the 2024 Esri User Conference Map Gallery, among 737 worldwide submissions. This recognition highlights the exceptional work and innovative use of geographic information system (GIS) technology by the HCPH team, specifically for their map of the Geography of Maternity Care Deserts.

Harris County Public Health’s (HCPH) Mosquito and Vector Control Division has identified a significant increase in West Nile virus (WNV), with 520 positive mosquito samples across 168 of its 268 operational areas. In addition, seven human cases of WNV and two travel-related dengue cases have been reported to HCPH in unincorporated Harris County (outside the City of Houston). HCPH urges residents to protect themselves and their loved ones against mosquito-borne illnesses.

Pets should not be included in celebrations that involve fireworks. Fireworks can cause injuries and burns in pets as well as people. For example, pets can eat or chew unattended fireworks, causing injury and illness. Frightened pets may break leashes, jump fences, run away, or bite someone, including beloved family members. Even if your Fourth of July does not include fireworks, pets may become frightened by noises from neighborhood celebrations.

The first County Pets on Wheels event, designed to provide community members with affordable pet care, offered spay or neuter, microchipping, and vaccine services to 20 dogs on March 22, 2024. The event was open only to dog owners in zip codes 77532 and 77652. All services were provided by licensed veterinarians and shelter staff from HCP.

The application for Uplift Harris, a guaranteed income pilot program, initially scheduled
to launch today at 9 a.m., has now been delayed. The application launch is being delayed because Harris
County Commissioners Court will discuss and take possible action on program details this Tuesday,
January 9. Information on the new application launch date will be announced later this week.
