Step 1: What You Need to Know

All COVID-19 vaccines provided by HCPH are free of charge. In most situations, Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax COVID-19 vaccines are preferred over the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine due to the risk of rare, but serious adverse events following administration of the J&J vaccine.

  • The Moderna vaccine can be provided to individuals 6 months and older. Moderna is administered as a 2-dose primary series for most people or a 3-dose primary series for people who are moderately or severely immunocompromised.
  • The Pfizer vaccine can be provided to individuals 6 months and older. Pfizer is administered as a 2-dose primary series for most people or a 3-dose primary series for people who are moderately or severely immunocompromised and children ages 6 months through 4 years old. Children ages 6 months through 4 years who have not yet completed their Pfizer primary series will receive a Pfizer bivalent vaccine as their third primary dose.
  • The Novavax adjuvanted vaccine can be provided to individuals 12 years and older. Novavax is administered as a 2-dose primary series.
Step 2: Making an Appointment with HCPH
  • Click on the Register Now link to go to HCPH's COVID-19 vaccine scheduling app.
  • Follow the instructions on the app to register.
  • Once your appointment is scheduled, you will receive a confirmation email or text message that will include your QR code. You must bring your QR code with you to the scheduled appointment.
Step 3: Receiving Your Vaccine
  • When arriving at an HCPH vaccination site, make sure to bring your QR code if you have a scheduled appointment. (Print out or on your phone)
  • If you did not schedule an appointment, please follow the signage and work with HCPH site staff to help you register.
  • Be prepared to wait 15-30 minutes after your vaccination to ensure you do not experience any adverse effects. HCPH has trained site staff to assist residents who feel they need medical care.

If you do not have transportation for your vaccination appointment, please contact the HCPH Vaccine Hotline at 832-927-8787.

Step 4: Scheduling Your Second Dose

Residents are encouraged to plan for their next dose. Individuals can sign up and schedule instantly.  Learn more here about staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccine and boosters.

Upon completion of your scheduled dose, you will receive a notification through text and/or email to schedule your next dose closer to the date of your next appointment. If there is no appointment availability, please continue to check the link daily for open appointments until you can sign up.

Step 5: Schedule Your Booster Dose

COVID-19 vaccine boosters can further enhance or restore protection that might have decreased over time after your primary series vaccination. Learn more about staying up to date with your COVID-19 vaccines here.

The CDC has developed an online COVID-19 vaccine booster tool to help you find out when to schedule a booster dose.

CDC recommends all eligible individuals aged 6 months and older get an updated COVID-19 booster to help restore protection that has decreased since their last vaccine and provides improved protection against newer variants. Updated booster doses, also known as bivalent boosters, target the most recent Omicron subvariants, BA.4 and BA.5, in addition to the original SARS-CoV-2.

The Novavax booster is a monovalent booster and is only recommended in situations when an individual would not receive a booster dose otherwise due to an allergy or preference.

Note:

Please note the steps outlined above are for Harris County Public Health vaccination sites only. Steps for other providers may differ.

Registration FAQ

How do I register without access to Internet or a computer?

If you or a loved one do not have access to the Internet or a computer, please use the phone number listed above to schedule your appointment or visit one of HCPH's vaccines sites for walk-up registration.

Can I receive my 2nd dose at HCPH if I got my 1st dose from another provider?

If you received your first dose of COVID-19 vaccine at another provider, you can still receive your second, additional, or booster dose at a vaccine site operated by Harris County Public Health (HCPH). To schedule your appointment, please call the HCPH Vaccine Hotline at 832-927-8787 or register online.

What do I do about my appointment if I do not have access to a personal vehicle?

Residents who do not have access to a personal vehicle may still receive vaccines at HCPH vaccination sites. Please call the health department (i.e., Harris County Public Health, Houston Health Department) you registered with for alternative arrangements. For appointments with Harris County Public Health, call the HCPH Vaccine Hotline at 832-927-8787.

What COVID-19 vaccine should I get?

All of the vaccines being offered by Harris County are safe and effective at protecting people from getting seriously ill, being hospitalized, and even dying—especially when boosted. You can choose which COVID-19 vaccine to get depending on your age and preference.

For adults ages 18 years and older, the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna) and protein-based COVID-19 vaccine (Novavax) are preferred over Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 vaccine. The primary difference between these vaccines is that the Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax vaccines require two shots whereas the Johnson & Johnson vaccine can be administered in one shot. Maximize protection and get all recommended vaccine doses and boosters as soon as possible.

Currently, the Pfizer & Moderna COVID-19 vaccines are the only COVID-19 vaccines available to children 6 months to 11 years old.

I lost my vaccine card. Can HCPH help me get a replacement?

Yes! If you lost your vaccine card and need a replacement one, call 832-927-8787. Our call center will help find your vaccination records and provide residents with a replacement card.
