Refugee Health Services

The Harris County Public Health (HCPH) Refugee Health Services (RHS) contracts with the U.S. Committee For Refugees and Immigrants to oversee refugee health screening in Harris County. Refugees are officially recognized individuals by the U.S. government. Texas is the second largest refugee resettlement state in the United States.

In operation for over 10 years, we are the only screening clinic for refugees in Harris County and we currently serve as the largest Refugee Health Screening Program in the state. 

The following population groups are eligible for free services: 

  • Amerasian 
  • Asylee
  • Cuban/Haitian Entrant  
  • Refugee 
  • Special Immigrant Visa 
  • Victim of Human Trafficking

The HCPH RHSP provides the following free services:

  • Physical examinations
  • Screening for Tuberculosis and other infectious diseases
  • Immunizations
  • Basic screening laboratory tests
  • Referrals to primary care providers

The provider may ask the patient about their:

  • Nutritional well-being
  • Reproductive health
  • Mental health
  • Dental health
  • Hearing and vision

Records of the services provided may be used when obtaining an I-693. HCPH does not provide full civil surgeon immigration medical exams. For a full list of approved civil surgeon providers, please visit  https://www.uscis.gov/tools/find-a-civil-surgeon.

voluntary resettlement agencies

We collaborate with the following voluntary resettlement agencies. They assist refugees with these services:

  • Housing
  • Job training
  • School enrollment
  • Food
  • Transportation
  • Applying for Medicaid and Social Security
