Public health is now battling new challenges. Each year brings new diseases, new chronic disease risks, and more natural and man-made disasters.

Get the Lead Out – Protect Your Family from Lead Exposure

Lead exposure can cause serious harm to the brain, nervous system, and reproductive system. Young children are especially vulnerable to lead dust exposure. During National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW), October 20-26, Harris County Public Health (HCPH) is raising awareness through two key programs: the Lead Poisoning Prevention Program and the Lead Abatement Program. These programs help families in Harris County by offering lead testing and removal services.

Honoring Indigenous Peoples and Promoting Health Equity

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is observed on October 14, honoring Indigenous peoples’
histories, cultures, and contributions across North America. This day provides an opportunity to honor
the strength, unique traditions, and resilience of indigenous communities whose ancestors have lived on
this land for thousands of years. It also promotes awareness of the challenges Indigenous populations
continue to face today and aims to foster understanding and unity among diverse cultures.
