Smokeless Tobacco

Smokeless tobacco comes in two basic forms, snuff and chewing tobacco. Snuff is finely ground tobacco packaged in cans or pouches. Chewing tobacco comes in the form of long strands of loose leaves, plugs, or twists of tobacco. Smokeless tobacco products are not a safe substitute for tobacco smoking. Harmful health effects include:

  • oral (mouth) cancer
  • addiction to nicotine
  • white sores in the mouth that can lead to cancer
  • gums slowly shrink away from around the teeth
  • bone loss around the roots of the teeth
  • staining of teeth
  • bad breath

Smokeless tobacco may also play a role in heart disease and high blood pressure. There are many reasons to quit using smokeless tobacco for good. Health reasons are obvious.
