Volunteer and Internships


TRAIN is a national Learning Management Network comprised of 31 Affiliates with their own Learning Management System. TRAIN has almost one million registered users and over 30,000 courses available in various areas of public health. TRAIN is a great resource for all those interested in public health and the latest in worldwide health issues, goals, and programs. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a TRAIN Affiliate and frequently provides up-to-date information as well as training on many issues.

What Is Texas TRAIN?

TX TRAIN is a Learning Management System (LMS). It was developed by the Public Health Foundation with a grant from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and funding from participating states and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Texas, along with approximately 30 other states, universities, and agencies, uses TRAIN as a centralized database for sharing public health training opportunities. The TrainingFinder Real-time Affiliate Integrated Network, or TRAIN, is the nation’s premier learning resource for professionals who protect the public’s health. TRAIN is comprised of the national site and participating TRAIN affiliate sites.

IS 700 Introduction to the National Incident Management System (NIMS) (REQUIRED)

Course Description: This course introduces and overviews the National Incident Management System (NIMS). NIMS provide a consistent nationwide template to enable all government, private-sector, and nongovernmental organizations to work together during domestic incidents. 

  • IMPORTANT - MRC Volunteers must first register for a FEMA SID after launching the course in TRAIN. The FEMA SID will be used to access the Final Exam.

Time: The overall length of the course will vary for each individual. IS 700A takes approximately 3 hours.

IS 100.C: Introduction to the Incident Command System (REQUIRED)

Course Description: ICS 100, Introduction to the Incident Command System, introduces the Incident Command System (ICS) and provides the foundation for higher level ICS training. This course describes the history, features and principles, and organizational structure of the Incident Command System. It also explains the relationship between ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS). 

  • IMPORTANT - MRC Volunteers must first register for a FEMA SID after launching the course in TRAIN. The FEMA SID will be used to access the Final Exam.

Time: 3 hours (including final exam)

Psychological First Aid

Course Description: PFA online is now available on the NCTSN Learning Center! PFA online includes a 6-hour interactive course that puts the participant in the role of a provider in a post-disaster scene.  

  • IMPORTANT - MRC Volunteers are required to create an account with The National Child Traumatic Stress Network before having access to the course.
