The Environmental Public Health Division (EPH) works to protect the public's health in Harris County by permitting and inspecting food establishments and public pools. The division also ensures the integrity of drinking water and neighborhood cleanliness. These objectives are accomplished through the following activities:

  • Ensuring compliance with State of Texas rules on food safety, water safety and public drinking water through surveillance, monitoring and inspections
  • Responding to citizen complaints on food poisoning, pools, water supply, lead exposure in homes and neighborhood nuisances
  • Abating neighborhood nuisances such as abandoned and unsafe buildings through owner notification and demolition
  • Reducing lead poisoning through screening children, case managing children with lead poisoning and removing lead-based paint from qualifying homes
